So I’ve seen Incredibles 2 twice now and I’ve come to the conclusion that Evelyn Deavor is basically one step away from being in actual serial killer territory. I swear I was getting serious Criminal Minds vibes from this woman anytime she was on screen
B u t w h e r e i s t h e p r o o f? you ask
*deep breath* W E L L ~~brace yourselves for an unnecessarily long-winded analysis of this character~~
1. She singles out and purposely isolates her victim. We hear Winston saying that it was Evelyn who did the collateral damage statistics on each of the supers, which purposely highlighted Helen/Elastigirl as the best option for the “bring back supers” campaign. It’s not a huge stretch of the imagination to assume then that Evelyn had zeroed in on Helen as her primary victim from the minute Winston first suggested his plan. Why did Elastigirl even need to be the Mockingjay of the pro-super movement to begin with if they could’ve just attached cameras to all of them and released that collective footage to the press? There’s really not much reason unless Evelyn had been the one pulling the strings from the get-go and suggesting to her brother to pick one of the supers to use as a poster child to get momentum going. It’s easier to start by manipulating one person first instead of tackling a whole group of people. Helen was the best option because out of the three, she would be the easiest to form a sense of camaraderie with and therefore the easiest to manipulate (which leads into bullet point #2). Also, getting only Helen for the job ensures that she’s going to be cut off from her regular support system and separated from them, which, again, makes her an easier target for manipulation.
2. She bonds with the victim and emotionally manipulates said victim into developing a false sense of trust. Evelyn plays the part of the fake friend flawlessly from the beginning, drawing Helen in and making her think that she has a companion or confidant she can count on. In the scene where Winston offers Helen the job, Evelyn makes a point to mention that she designed the cameras and to make eye contact with Helen, supposedly creating a mutual sense of respect between the two of them. She continues to cultivate this “close girl friend” dynamic as the film continues, pretending to be supportive of Helen’s efforts and listening to Helen’s ideas (interesting to note here that the lack of sincerity on Evelyn’s part is somewhat directly contrasted with Bob’s legitimate attempts to vocally support his wife as well as with his genuine concern for her).
3. She gives the victim presents and/or incentive to stay close and continue to trust her. Evelyn seemingly did her research and knew Helen would be nostalgic over the Elasticycle so she went and designed her a completely new model, which she has personally delivered to Helen’s home along with a friendly note. Helen is pulled in by this bait immediately - hook, line, and sinker. It’s also implied that Evelyn has a hand in having the other supers brought to Devtech headquarters in order to convince Helen that she is doing valuable work and to ease her doubts about the mission. The emotional reward of knowing she’s inspired other supers to come out of hiding is enough to alleviate Helen’s misgivings for the time being and keeps her within Evelyn’s reach.
4. She toys with/plays a cat-and-mouse game with her victim in order to get under the victim’s skin and string the victim along. Evelyn milks the Screenslaver plot for all its worth and even indulges Helen’s own ideas about how to catch the villain, constantly baiting her with bits and pieces of clues to keep her in the game for as long as possible. Evelyn does what many organized, manipulative criminals are known for - playing chess with their victim - but instead of the victim being the opponent, they’re unknowingly being used as one of the pawns. Evelyn even goes so far as to somehow get the little girl in the crowd to hold up the sign saying “The Screenslaver is still out there” as a way of goading Helen on (also it’s just creepy as hell; did she kidnap that child and force her to make that sign or something??). More about this in point #6.
5. She has an unhealthy obsession/fixation with her victim. Everything else previously mentioned serves as evidence for this point, but in addition, Evelyn also makes some rather odd and uncalled-for statements about Helen’s competence as a superhero. She first implies that if Helen had been the only one fighting the Underminer, things wouldn’t have ended so problematically, indirectly throwing shade at Bob, Frozone, and the kids and propping Helen up as the superior one of the group. Then later she insinuates that Helen should be happy to be “out front” in the public eye because she’d always been in “Mr. Incredible’s shadow” and deserved more recognition. It’s never made entirely clear why Evelyn makes these statements (which, interestingly enough, Helen either ignores or blatantly disagrees with) but it seems to either be some warped form of hero worship or Evelyn is simply further trying to isolate Helen/separate her from her support system.

6. She enjoys messing with her victim. This connects back to point #4. Why does Evelyn play this convoluted game with Helen in the first place? For one thing, yes, it is to attract public attention. But it’s also because Evelyn actually just enjoys playing the game and using Helen as a pawn in her plan. When Helen has been captured and she asks, “Are you going to kill me?” Evelyn responds, “Nah, using you is more fun.” She’s not one of those villains who is regretful and in turmoil about the course of action she’s taking - she’s having the time of her life treating Helen like a human chess piece and she openly admits it.
7. She uses the primary victim to lure in other victims. After Evelyn hypnotizes Helen, the other supers appear at the Parr residence wearing the same goggles. This, along with the “using you is more fun” statement, pretty much shows that Evelyn manipulated Helen into putting the goggles on the rest of the supers in order to carry out the plan. However, Evelyn’s biggest play was to use Helen to successfully manipulate Bob. In the job offer scene, Evelyn is in the background carefully observing everything going on and she seems particularly attuned to Helen and Bob’s body language/interactions as evidenced here:
If seeing the super family together wasn’t enough evidence that Helen was a perfect tool to use to get to Bob, then this setup definitely was. Helen and Bob sit very close together during the entire duration of this scene, and this is the the kind of thing that devoted couples usually do even if they’re not entirely conscious of it. Evelyn clearly notices this and it’s not hard to assume that seeing this kind of body language between the two solidified her plan to use Helen as bait to lure in Bob. They’re obviously a couple and obviously close, so this is easy pickings. And Evelyn’s keen observational skills pay off, because upon getting the call that Helen is in trouble, Bob immediately rushes to go help her without missing a beat. Also, if you watch the fight between them carefully, the main reason he loses (besides the kiss) is because he’s holding back the entire time in an attempt not to hurt Helen. Evelyn not only gets Helen to kiss him to throw him off guard, but also seemingly knew in advance that he wouldn’t use his full strength in the confrontation because he’d be too worried about potentially hurting his wife.

8. She taunts her victim while said victim is in pain/incapacitated/dying. When Evelyn first captures Helen, she not only locks her in a freezing cell of sorts, but she jokingly warns her not to stretch or she’ll “break”; the tone of voice Evelyn adopts here is pretty condescending and even somewhat amused. This same type of thing happens later when Helen breaks into the plane in an attempt to stop Evelyn from getting away. It’s not enough for Evelyn to attempt to kill her - no, she has to taunt Helen while attempting to kill her. As Helen is staggering around the cockpit suffering from oxygen deprivation, Evelyn launches into a speech describing exactly how Helen is probably going to die and once again is seemingly pretty amused by the entire situation. Evelyn’s behavior in both scenes tie back in to the idea in point #6 that she simply enjoys and gets a sick sense of satisfaction from toying with people and watching them suffer at her hands.
So…TL;DR it is a really, REALLY good thing Evelyn Deavor got locked up. She basically exhibits the same traits as any classic serial killer and probably would’ve turned into one if the movie wasn’t rated PG lmao. Winston needs to use his money to pay for an in-depth psych eval for his sister because she clearly went off the deep end after their parents died and needs serious help

Shiro

It’s not his first time kissing someone. He’s had a few partners in kissing, both in high school and pre-training for the Garrison. However, once he took his flight classes more seriously, Shiro focused more on his aim for the stars rather than looking for a lover

This is what makes your kiss with him sparkle better than his others. He hasn’t really connected romantically with someone in a long time, both in a physical and emotional way, so you kissing him felt new.

He’s not bad at it either. Shiro makes sure to be very cautious and brushing with his lips on yours, in case you don’t feel comfortable enough to kiss deeply.

It’s super hard for him, though. Shiro loves to kiss deeply, especially at an angle, where you feel the passion between one another.
He doesn’t hold onto you yet, but once you are relaxed in his lips, he’ll carefully hold your fingers, and as the kiss goes on, he’ll trail along with the flow of the kiss.

Your first kiss with him would occur in the hangar of his lion, when you two are simply sitting and gazing up at Black’s glorious stance, making small talk.

Now, I’ve seen several headcanons where Keith is clumsy and doesn’t know what human contact initiates and blah, blah, blah. Bullshit.
I see Keith, from what I understand him to be in the canon version, as a young adolescent man who didn’t engage in physical contact immensely throughout his life, therefore, he does not naturally flow into it.

Hence, you teach him, which makes this all the more cuter.

You’ll have to be very blunt with Keitth for a kiss. He will probably not see the evident stars in your eyes that spell the words “kiss me”, and if you lean in, don’t expect him to get the cue.

Of course, it won’t be a dull moment. You’ll have to warm up to him and hold his fingers, rub them and just stay in that understandable silence.

This will create a space for comfortability in his head for you and will relax Keith further.

Small talk is important. Ask him about his current mood, his thoughts on you, and what his reaction would be if you wanted to kiss him then and there.

Keith should probably understand that you’re trying to imply something, so be as seriously lovey-dovey as possible.

Ask him if you can kiss him. A banter of,’ “you.” “yes.” “want to kiss me.” “yes.” “on the lips.” “not on the nose, nope.” ‘, will probably ensue

You’ll direct him physically and mentally simultaneously. Carress his face in your hands, relax him further and bring him to your lips. Don’t count on him graphing the map of your face and pinpoint the target of your lips, IT WON’T WORK FAM.
This first encounter of the lips might take place in his room or the monitor room, if he’s just having a moment to himself. Don’t let Lance see, though.

Lance

Again, I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Lance is not an experienced lover, just a lovesick boy.
He’s one of those guys that thinks they know what to do when it comes down to liplock, but the only real kiss he’s had was probably back in preschool.

Lance may have also watched his share of movies in the romance genre, but seeing something and doing it are two different experiences.

You don’t need to relax Lance for your first kiss, because it will be spontaneous and clumsy, albeit not how Lance wanted it to ultimately go.

You’d probably be so ecstatic with something that you just turn to Lance and hold his face to mush your lips into his soft ones.

They’ll probably be a little open because it was so unexpected, ew.

To show your love for Lance, you’d probably peck his face and cheeks multiple times and then just say, “Screw it.”
This is the point where you pull back to study Lance’s flabbergasted face, slapped with rushed rose at what you just did to him

You’d kiss him harder, grip his forearms and rub them as you move your lips against his numb ones.

At one point, you’d release your strong hold on his lips to mumble, “Kiss me.” breathlessly and direct his hands onto your waist and back.

Lance is so stunned, he legitimately cannot speak.

You’ll have to wait another time when he’ll catch you off-guard and smother you with his kisses and loud smooches

Hunk

Hunk hasn’t had too many kisses on his lips, but I can definitely assure you that he has received many cheek kisses from his fellow female classmates. Hunk might be nervous at first, but if he feels a strong affections for you, he’ll let his ramblings carry on about his feelings and through that, he gains confidence.

This kiss could happen at the Garrison on the roof, or it could very well be in the kitchen.

I could see him letting his food burn momentarily just to kiss you because you’re the best thing before food.

It’ll be times in the kitchen where you two are chatting casually, you helping him out with the food, tasting things, etc.

Again, I feel like small talk could definitely enhance Hunk’s comfort level with you and enable him to relax easily.
Gentle physical touches can speed up Hunk’s direct feelings towards you. He’ll begin to realize that he wants you to touch him more but doesn’t know how to say it without him sounding weird, so he says nothing.

After cooking and baking all the foods on his list, Hunk will pat down the counter next him, so you hop on as he leans over it on an elbow.

You don’t need to make small talk at this point because Hunk’s already hinting at certain things that he admires about you and is complimenting your personality and features.

You both will establish a mutual understanding that you want the relationship to jump further somehow, so you speak up: “Would you like a kiss?”

Okay, so maybe that wasn’t the best thing to say since now, he’s rambling and blushing and talking about how he doesn’t want to force you into this and how he’ll let you take your time–

Until you gently take his hand, look into his warm eyes and assure him that this is what you would like from him.

Hunk’ll be super hesitant, but show him the ‘”kiss me” eyes that Keith can’t figure out and he’ll get your message

You two will only have a three second peck, but after pulling away a bit and a small stare into each others eyes, you both go in for another kiss, this time, a little longer and some action ;)

Matt

Oh, I think you all saw how Romeo got when he caught sight of the princess. Y’all know this mothatrucka kissed some ladies in his life and did well at it.

Maybe not at first, but every girl is different and I bet you my life savings that Shiro discussed some secrets in their early years of the Garrison.

He’s a bit flirty at first, but he’s mostly goofy and quirky around you. When he drops hints about his feelings for you, Matt will slide in a suave comment here and there, but like with Lance, you take it as a meaningless move on you.

Until he’ll tell you outright in a blushy manner that he adores every aspect of you, you will not notice the small things he does to go out of his way for you.
Anything you say, Matt will support you in the best way.

Please don’t friendzone my son. He’s trying.

We don’t know too much about Matt’s persona yet, but I bet he would be serious with you one time and take you out on a walk-’n-talk journey about the Castle.

There’s no small talk, just trying to get to know one another better. You will slowly understand Matt’s affection as he slowly reveals his experiences in Zarkon’s arena and fighting with the resistance. His gentle personality will show and you understand he’s nothing like Pidge, who’s hard to crack.
Your heart will beat faster at the thought of someone so fast-paced actually slowing down his life to care intensely about you.

At one point in the conversation, you will stop talking and begin speaking lower, in hushed mumbles, as your faces come closer on their own.

Once you reach his nose, you will pause, because it hits you that you hear nothing but the heavy breathing between you two and your faint, yet deep heartbeats.

You didn’t feel it at first, but as soon as Matt shifted his hands onto your wrists to pull you closer, you sink into his touch and just gently massage your lips against his own.

This is one of the sweet moments Lance could not have, yet recorded gleefully.

So I want to say something about Incredibles 2 (yeah, yeah, I know, AGAIN - bear with me lmao) I think is really important when considering both films. People are upset either about Bob getting “pushed to the side” in this movie or about him being “unsupportive” of Helen and I honestly think everyone on either end of the spectrum is completely missing a one of the biggest points the franchise (can I call it that now?) has been trying to make since the first movie.

Bob and Helen have always seen each other as equals, both in hero work and in the marriage, and the main centerpiece of the Incredibles’ story is this relationship based on equal partnership.

Bob doesn’t necessarily get upset because he thinks Helen is inferior to him, nor does Helen ever even suggest that she’s the better superhero. Both of them have always operated under the assumption that they’re on equal footing - we see hints of this when they’re fighting together in the first film and playing off each other’s unique strengths - so for some random stranger to butt in with statistics and suggest that somehow one of them is better than the other is understandably kind of a slap in the face. Notice that Helen never demonizes Bob for how he’s feeling; she honestly admits she’s happy to be wanted for the job but at the same time acknowledges and validates Bob’s frustration with the situation (and his frustration is just that - with the situation, not with his wife). Bob, on his end, grits his teeth and tries the best he can to support and encourage her even though it’s not easy for him to see her getting the opportunity he wanted.

His frustration isn’t just limited to the hero work though. He’s also dealing with the fear that he’s somehow an inadequate parent in comparison to Helen, which we see when Dash says, “I’ll just wait for mom to get back” to help with his math homework and Bob later grumbles, “What am I, a substitute parent?” Now the film could’ve gone the route of automatically having the wife be superior in every area and scolding her husband for being a complete doofus (an unfortunate formula in almost every sitcom nowadays), but what it does instead is show Helen having a moment of weakness during the phone call and freaking out that she has to come back home because there might be something wrong and she has to be the one to fix it. Bob says something to the effect of “You don’t think I can handle this?” to which she responds by backtracking and apologizing and then respectfully asking if he needs her to come home. And we see later that Bob is just as capable of making the effort to help his kids with their problems as Helen is, even if it takes him awhile to get the hang of it.

Helen has doubts about Bob staying with the kids just as much as he has doubts about her doing the hero job, but as we see they find a way to stay on equal footing in both areas. They continually tell each other they’ll be amazing at the task they’ve each taken on, and despite their personal weaknesses and misgivings they make an effort to work together and trust each other for the sake of the entire family, even when they’re not actually physically together.

Now, to jump back a bit to the first point about them being equally matched superheroes. Evelyn tries to suggest more than once that Helen should be the superior hero, first saying that there wouldn’t have been trouble if only Elastigirl alone had gone up against the Underminer, and then later implying that Helen should be happy to be in the limelight since she was always under “Mr. Incredible’s shadow.” Helen gets visibly defensive about the second statement, leaning forward and replying, “No, no, I beg to differ” as if she’s about to get into an argument with Evelyn. Helen’s reaction implies that she’s probably never had a reason to believe that she was inferior to Bob or that she needed to show him up, so to speak. By extension this implies that Bob probably never even gave her a reason to believe she needed to prove herself as being a better hero. The two of them have different skill sets but have always been equally matched and neither of them have ever seen it any other way. Again, for some stranger to butt in and suggest otherwise is just as ludicrous an idea to Helen as it was to Bob earlier on in the film. In a way it’s almost as if Evelyn is subtly trying to pit the two against each other (how this eventually plays into her plan, I have no idea, but considering she’s two steps away from being a Criminal Minds unsub maybe she just enjoys screwing with people for fun).

Oddly enough, on a sort of meta scale, many viewers have been doing the same exact thing Evelyn does within the actual film - pit Bob and Helen against each other. “Oh the movie portrays Bob as weak because he can’t do the hero work” or “oh Helen is better because she doesn’t complain and totally kicks ass” - I’m sorry, but both sides are wrong. One of the major parts of both films is intentionally showing an imperfect married couple struggling to make things work and keep their family together. And a marriage only works if both parties view each other as equal partners and put in equal time and effort. That’s the crux of this franchise.

And on a bit of a sidenote, honestly, one of the most problematic things about some of the negative reaction to the characterizations in Incredibles 2 is that it is a product of this warped mindset Western society has subconsciously adopted that the parent who stays home is somehow weaker or less valuable than the parent who goes out and does “real” work. Bob is weak because he has to be a stay-at-home dad and Helen is only strong because she gets to go out and do superhero work. Utter bullshit. The film tries to show that both are equally valuable, and that it takes just as much strength, if not more, to make sacrifices and stay home with your kids as it does to go out and do a job to support your family. Parenting shouldn’t be this competition where one parent’s role is more important than the other because that parent happens to have a flashier occupation, but we’ve unnecessarily turned it into a competition. I really have to commend the movie for defying this stupid mindset and for actively showing that not only are the husband and wife equal but also that neither one is more important than the other in terms of their value to the family and to society.
